SYNOPSIS
At the wheel of his van, heading toward Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Alsatian painter Roger Dale drives across Europe with a sense of apprehension. In the back of the vehicle, he is transporting his greatest masterpiece, an impressive series of 100 canvases: “Struthof, 100 Views of Freedom,” created in 1994 within the grounds of the Nazi concentration camp at Natzwiller-Struthof in Alsace.
As he awaits his arrival in Sarajevo at the Collegium Artisticum gallery to exhibit the work, he tells his story, shares his memories, his reflections on the world, and his insatiable need to paint in order to think things through and heal from it.
THE DIRECTORS
Longtime friends Charles Schnaebele and Virgile Tyrode met up in Paris, where they were looking for jobs in film and construction, hoping one day to be able to direct and produce their own documentaries.
When they learned that Jean-Pierre Mocky was looking for interns, they knocked on his door. Quickly becoming close to the director, they seized the long-awaited opportunity to make a film of their own, a portrait of the maestro: from this initial collaboration came "The Law of the Albatross".
They then made "Pax Vobis", a documentary film retracing the life and work of the painter Roger Dale. For it, they followed him on his journey to Bosnia-Herzegovina, on the eve of a major exhibition.
